New movies are almost always focused on young people. Recently I discovered a website which features Movies About Aging and Elderhood, including several recommendations for films focusing on issues affecting older adults. Many of these movies can be accessed free through sites such as Kanopy and Hoopla Digital. These sites only require that you have a library card. For other viewing options, use a site like JustWatch.
So far I’ve sampled three: Still Mine, What They Had and Alive Inside which I had never heard of but all were wonderful to watch (especially if you love music, start with Alive Inside). Although I had never heard of any of these titles, they were all wonderful to watch. If you especially love music, start with Alive Inside. Unless you regularly visit a theatre which features films other than the latest releases, these will be new to you as well.
Some of these movies feature topics such as Alzheimer’s Disease and other late life illnesses, but then again there are offerings such as Eager For Your Kisses: Love and Sex at 95 and Good Luck to You, Leo Grande which are quite different.
If you’re unhappy with what’s available on TV and in the local cinemas, try some of these instead. They will warm your heart. At the home page of Movies About Aging and Elderhood start with the Top Twelve Films on Elderhood and Aging from 2012 to 2022, which includes the movies mentioned above.
