Retirement -A Bit Later Than Planned

Since my replacement at Sunnyside Community Services was not hired until November (and a colleague left shortly after I did in August), I worked a bit longer than planned. Doing a combination of in person and remote work, my last day was Friday, Nov. 22. So I’ve had more time to adjust to my new stage of life.

In addition to the many volunteer roles with older adults I mentioned in my last post, I’ve found a new rhythm in planning day to day life. I’ve especially enjoyed reconnecting with many friends that I’ve worked with in the past, or are otherwise connected through my involvement in the nonprofit community. As I tell people in my weekly session with Front Porch, Secrets to a Satisfying Retirement, it’s important to stay connected with people, both online and in person.

Especially having just celebrated Thanksgiving, I am grateful that I was able to work almost until age 70 and at a time that I chose, which was not the experience of many I speak to. I’m also fortunate to be in good health, and to have many good friends as well as my partner Lisa.

Tomorrow is Giving Tuesday, a day to help charities that do important work. Here is a short list of organizations I support, many which strive to improve the life of older adults:

  1. Braver Angels
  2. DOROT
  3. Foundation for Art & Healing
  4. Front Porch
  5. Future Scholars of the World
  6. Mitzvah Circle
  7. Musicians on Call
  8. Selfhelp Community Services
  9. Senior Planet
  10. Wish of a Lifetime

Finally, I was recently interviewed for the Navigating Solo podcast on Retirement Reimagined. Listen here.
